This article used to be built on the premise that “rebooting the temporalis-muscle pump through chewing” normalizes the hair cycle. We could not confirm any research connecting chewing and hair, so we rewrote the premise in August 2026.
To be clear about the claim this article was built on: we followed every source it cited and found no study showing that chewing changes the hair cycle.
Two studies from the Lotte Central Institute do exist, published in Japanese-language journals: scalp blood flow during gum chewing rose by 44.0% at the vertex and 47.1% at the front in 20 healthy adults (Jpn Pharmacol Ther 2022), and a cross-sectional survey of 27 institute researchers found thicker vertex hair among those who chewed gum longer (Anti-Aging Medicine 2021). Both measure momentary blood flow or a snapshot association. Lotte itself states that no research has yet demonstrated an effect of gum chewing on hair.
Here, separately from that claim, this article is about observing shed hair itself.
The idea of a hair cycle
Hair goes through anagen (growth), catagen (regression), and telogen (resting) phases, cycling and being replaced on a regular basis. Shedding a certain amount every day is normal.
Hair that has shed naturally is often said to have a rounded shape at the root. Hair shed partway through the growth phase is said to look different.
The idea is that this difference lets you infer something about the state of the hair cycle.
What self-observation can do
Place shed hairs on white paper in good light. Taking a close-up photo with a smartphone camera lets you make out the shape to some degree.
If you keep a record, note:
- The date
- The number of hairs shed
- Whether short, thin hairs are mixed in, and roughly what proportion
- What you changed at that time (medication, shampoo, changes in daily life)
What self-observation cannot do
This is the main point. What this method can actually tell you is far less than it seems.
Telling root shapes apart is hard
Clinics use a microscope to magnify and observe. Reliably distinguishing a growth-phase hair from a resting-phase hair with the naked eye or a smartphone close-up is difficult.
Sample bias is unavoidable
The hairs you happen to pick up at the sink are just the ones that caught your eye. Thin hairs are easy to miss; thick hairs stand out. Bias enters at the point of counting.
You cannot set your own threshold for “abnormal”
This article used to say that “20% or more short, thin hairs is conclusive proof that your scalp infrastructure has collapsed.” We could not confirm the source of that threshold, so we removed it.
You cannot apply a threshold like that to your own self-observation data.
So what should you actually do
If shedding hair concerns you, seeing a clinic is faster than continuing to observe it yourself.
A dermatologist or a clinic that treats AGA/FAGA can examine you under a microscope and run tests as needed. What they do depends on the cause.
At best, self-observation is useful as material to describe “when it started changing, and how” when you do see a clinic. Even then, the record does not need to be precise; a date and a note of what you noticed is enough.
If counting is making you more anxious, stop. When thinking about your hair is genuinely distressing, consulting someone is better than continuing to track it.
