Rice balls, pasta, fluffy sandwiches. Much of what you can buy at a convenience store is made soft enough to swallow after just a few chews. Being easy to eat is a strength of these products, so this is not something to fault them for.
Still, when chewing count drops, the time it takes to finish eating also shortens. That’s where the problem of finishing a meal before you feel full comes from.

What Happens When You Eat Soft Food
First, this is not a story where energy expenditure drops to zero if you don’t chew.
In the study E03, even the condition where a liquid meal was swallowed as-is produced 3.4 kcal of heat production over the 90 minutes after eating. This is DIT — the energy the body uses for digestion after a meal. The condition where a bite was chewed for 30 seconds produced 7.4 kcal. The difference is about 4 kcal. It’s a significant difference, but not large enough on its own to be worth chasing.
Where a difference actually shows up is in fullness.
The study E05 examined something very close to the topic of this article. Fifty healthy adults were compared eating 28g of walnuts either whole or as a paste. Eating them whole produced higher fullness and lower hunger (p < 0.05).
Same calories, same food — but a different shape changed how full people felt.
There is a caveat, though. This study found no significant difference in blood glucose, insulin, or active GLP-1. The claim that “not chewing causes a blood sugar spike” cannot be drawn from this study.
On the digestive side, there is the systematic review E06. It summarizes that large food boluses swallowed without sufficient chewing can change how digestion proceeds and potentially affect postprandial blood glucose rise. However, this is a review, not an experiment conducted on convenience store food.
Adjustments You Can Make with What You Buy
Given the above, the goal isn’t energy expenditure — it’s “extending the time it takes to finish eating.” You can add this with things you can buy alongside your meal at the convenience store.
Eat Roasted, Unsalted Nuts First
Five to ten unsalted roasted almonds or walnuts at the start of a meal. Because they’re hard and low in moisture, it naturally takes time before you can swallow them.
The direction here matches how E05 confirmed the fullness difference with walnuts. However, 28g comes to about 185 kcal. Factor in the added calories. Choosing small packets makes this easier to manage.
Add Stem Wakame or Chewy Kelp Snacks
Dried seaweed products take time to bite through relative to their calorie content, which is minimal. Eating a little between other dishes slows the overall pace.
Some of these products are high in sodium, so check the salt-equivalent amount on the package.
Bite into Uncut Fruit or Vegetables
Bite into a washed cucumber or apple without cutting it first. The motion of biting through with your front teeth rarely gets used with pre-cut foods.
What You Can Reasonably Expect
- Energy expenditure increases, but the difference is only a few kcal per meal
- Fullness does show a difference — this is where the studies found significance
- The cited studies found no confirmed effect on blood glucose or insulin
We won’t say convenience store food is the cause of weight gain. If total calorie intake is the same, whether the food is soft or hard doesn’t determine the outcome by itself. Adding chewing resistance is a way to buy time until you finish eating, so the fullness signal has a chance to arrive.
